PORTFOLIO

American Public Media Group

September 2021-March 2022

Audio and Video Production Intern

Brains On: For this episode, I spliced together multiple takes, pulled and designed sound effects, performed audio repair with iZotope, leveled, EQ’d and compressed dialogue, and mixed the overall episode to spec.

Terrible, Thanks for Asking and Don't Ask Tig: I utilized iZotope RX, FabFilter plug-ins, and Powair to perform audio repair and mixed the episode to spec.

Picnic Basket Theatre

May 2021-present

Associate Artistic Director and Sound Supervisor

Within this position, I lead production meetings, evaluate scripts, provide feedback, supervise the recording process (4-8 voice actors), and distribute the podcast episodes via Anchor. For each audio drama we produce, I repair audio with iZotope, splice together multiple takes, and apply EQ, compression, and noise gates. Additionally, I creatively sound design and compose underscoring to create an immersive storytelling experience.

Dear God

written by Michael Punter

UMN/Guthrie BFA Acting Company

May 2021

Dear God is a fantasy set in modern-day America. It contains many of the things we see in the news presently, including intolerance, prejudice and violence. But it also contains friendship, love and several miracles. It’s about how I see the US as a regular visitor to its shores: a young country, wrestling with a troubled past but pretty-much boundless in its potential and enthusiasm to make a better future.

For this production, I composed thematic underscoring and integrated the sound design in post production. I sonically emphasized the way the script oscillated between epic and intimate through orchestration choices, processing effects, and melodic themes.

Happy Birthday Angel Dearest

written by Javi Rivera DeBruin

The Parsnip Ship/The Artists' Theatre of Boston

July 1st, 2021

It's Angel's 33rd birthday. It's time to celebrate, and everyone's joining the party: her family, her neighbor, even a time traveling pirate.

The TalkGirl as a time traveling device was my entry point into this design.

. As the play investigated memory as nostalgia, trauma, repression, and imagination, I explored how the playback of tape could sonically change to represent the process of remembering.

The Table

dir. by Kim Longi

University of Minnesota Theatre and Dance Department

Creative Collaboration Series

February 27th - March 1, 2020

This work explores who is invited and who is denied access to “the table” of societal, political, familial, and global discussions. In order to add depth and specificity to a dialogue-sparse play, I collaborated with both the director and the ensemble to compose the underscoring for a 90 minute show as well as compile audio from interviews and broadcasts.

The Story of Nitrogen

written and narrated by Greg Klinger

University of Minnesota Extension Office of Water Resources

September 2020 - present

This six part agronomy podcast explores how nitrogen, an often overlooked molecule, affects our crops, land, and water. As the post production editor, I splice together extensive interviews to fit the writer's narrative. My tasks include line editing via script, iZotope audio repair, selecting and mixing underscoring, managing EQs, gain structure and volume automation.

A Melody for My Younger Self

Senior Thesis, summa cum laude

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

May 2021

Melody for My Younger Self is a sound art installation that collects and curates what people would tell their younger selves. With a total of seventeen participants (selected from family and friends), I asked each person to write a one to two page letter to their younger selves and then record a reading of it. I then analyzed and organized the responses into similar or juxtaposing sections of life phases and choices, spliced together the recordings, and composed underscoring to create the installation.

My Reaper

The University of Minnesota Composers' Concert

May 2021

My Reaper is an electroacoustic exploration of what can be composed from a 45-second recording of a poem. With all the layers taken from the original recording, it explores repetition, spatial sound design, and suspense.  The cover art, poem, and performance are all done by Jack Magnus.

Appropriate

dir. by H. Adam Harris

written by Branden Jacob Jenkins

University of Minnesota Theatre and Dance Department

BFA Studio Series

November 13th-15th, 2020

Appropriate explores family, generational secrets, and memory. The sound design presents hidden histories through cicadas, heartbeats, and the voices of the past. For the Zoom production, I focused on sonic transitions and how the sounds of the past evolved as the characters discover their  buried secrets.

The Peercast

Hosted by Kyra Rahn and John Patterson

University of Minnesota Theatre and Dance Department

September 2020 - May 2021

This student run podcast create connections between the University of Minnesota Dance and Theatre department students, faculty, staff, alumni, and beyond. As audio engineer of this podcast, I edited together different segments, removed dead space and mistakes. I also fixed gain structure and used EQ and compressors/limiters. With 29 total episodes, I worked on a weekly timeline with a four day turn around per episode. This project requires quick and clear communication with the producers and strong organizational skills to create the best projects on time.

When This is Over

Choreographer: Sophia Louwagie

Dancers: Sophia Louwagie, Aubrey Clark, and Ciara Schweitzer

University of Minnesota Theatre and Dance Department

Composition Showing

May 1st, 2020

This piece was born out of the sudden loneliness of COVID-19's mandated quarantine. For my research, I listened to what all types of people - reporters, artists, comedians, and politicians - were saying about the pandemic. In close collaboration with the choreographer, Sophia Louwagie, I pieced together audio clips and original piano music to create a story of loss that turns into a story of hope.
